Can you really get a free boiler on the Affordable Warmth scheme?

You may have heard the phrase ‘Affordable warmth scheme’ being talked about but might not quite know what it means. Read on, because you could get a free boiler! The Affordable warmth scheme was set up by the government and it allows you to get either a free ‘A’ rated boiler or a variety of other helpful forms of insulation that can boost your home’s warmth.

If you have an inefficient, faulty central heating boiler or poor insulation, you probably want to do something about it. The Affordable Warmth Scheme is a way for you to save money on the cost of insulating your home, especially over the cold snaps of the Winter months. The service is available if you receive government benefits and live in a property that is classed as private and if you have poor insulation in your walls and roof or a faulty or inefficient central heating boiler.

So what’s on offer? The Affordable Warmth Scheme means you can have a natural gas energy efficient boiler, or free loft, cavity wall or solid wall insulation fitted for free.

Whereas you might have heard of the Green Deal, the affordable warmth scheme is a side scheme, and is different as it doesn’t involve any loans.

So how does it work? It’s easy.

1. If you are eligible you can apply.  This is a varied scheme but if you live in a private home, and have benefits such as pension credit, child tax credit, income-based job seeker’s allowance, income-related employment and support allowance, income support or working tax credit, you could use the scheme.

2. A free technical survey can determine your eligibility by looking at your boiler and insulation.

2. The government have already arranged for accredited installer to be paid from the 6 major energy providers.

3.  Your boiler or insulation is fitted by your fitter free of charge – no labour costs, no parts, no fuss.

What savings can I make with the Affordable Warmth Scheme?

As nice as it is to be warm and toasty in Winter, another warming fact is that your new boiler or insulation can line your pockets too! If your house is older, you will see a huge difference when it comes to your bills. According to the Energy Saving Trust you can save up to £310 per year with a brand new boiler under the affordable warmth scheme, and £180 when you get loft insulation installed.

Is there anything else about the affordable warmth scheme you need to know?

We would mention that the scheme only covers replacing items like faulty gas central heating boilers rather than radiators and you will be provided with a natural gas-fired central heating boiler. Faults that are considered by the affordable warmth scheme include the boiler being corroded, not lighting (including a faulty pilot light, strange banging noises, leaking water or gas– but there are many other faults that you can qualify for the scheme with.)

If you have already applied and found that you couldn’t get an installer to complete the work, you can apply again, or you can contact a fitter directly. You can reach a qualified affordable warmth scheme fitter here.
